Twin XL Murphy Beds fit a 38″ × 80″ mattress, five inches longer than a twin. They sleep one adult or teen who needs the extra length.

Choosing a Twin XL Murphy Bed

Who it is for

One sleeper who needs the length of a queen in the width of a twin: a tall teen, an adult in a guest room or home office, or anyone used to a dorm-length bed.

Mattress

A standard twin XL mattress, 38″ × 80″, up to 13″ thick (11″ or less recommended) and no more than 110 lb, with no box spring. On the Urban Stack bunk bed the top bunk takes a mattress up to 8″ thick. Our Gel-Max memory foam mattress comes in twin XL.

Footprint

Closed, a twin XL bed on its own is 45″ wide (InLine 54″, its sofa in front) and 88″ tall, 16″ deep (Penthouse 21″), and opens 90″ out from the wall (Penthouse 95″). With one or two side hutches a vertical twin XL is 60″ to 84½″ wide. A horizontal twin XL is 86″ wide (InLine 94½″) and 48″ tall, 88″ with a top hutch, and opens 49″; the bunk bed is 86″ wide and 93″ tall and opens 53″. The ceiling clearance calculator checks the bed’s swing against a ceiling fan or light.

Layouts and collections

All five collections make a twin XL. Urban, Metropolitan and InLine also make it horizontal, and the Urban Stack Murphy Bunk Bed comes in twin XL as well as twin.

Murphy Bed questions

Answers from the team that builds BredaBeds in Meridian, Idaho.

What is a Murphy Bed?

A Murphy Bed, also called a wall bed, is hinged at one end so it folds up into a cabinet against the wall when you’re not using it. It’s named after William Murphy, who patented his folding bed in the early 1900s. BredaBeds use a counterbalanced spring mechanism, so one room can be a guest room, office or living room by day and a bedroom at night.

What’s the difference between the BredaBeds collections?

Mostly the door style and the cabinet depth. Urban has flat slab doors in melamine and the lowest prices. Metropolitan has raised-panel doors in 3D laminate for a classic look. Penthouse has faux-drawer fronts on a 21″-deep cabinet. InLine comes with its own sofa. Studio pairs slab doors with optional 21″-deep hutches. Penthouse and Studio hutches are wardrobe depth, for hanging clothes; the other collections’ hutches are 16″ deep with shelves. Compare all five collections.

Should I get a vertical or a horizontal Murphy Bed?

On a vertical Murphy Bed you sleep perpendicular to the wall, and the cabinet is tall and narrow. On a horizontal bed you sleep parallel to the wall, and the cabinet is wide and short, which helps under low or sloped ceilings and in rooms without the floor depth for a vertical bed to open. Urban, Metropolitan and InLine make horizontal beds, in twin through queen; the Urban Stack bunk bed is horizontal too. See Vertical vs. Horizontal Murphy Beds.

Should I get a vertical or a horizontal twin XL Murphy Bed?

A vertical twin XL is 45″ wide for the bed on its own, 88″ tall, and opens 90″ into the room. A horizontal twin XL, in Urban, Metropolitan or InLine, is 86″ wide and 48″ tall without a top hutch, and opens just 49″, so it suits a low ceiling or a room without much floor in front of the wall. The Urban Stack bunk bed also comes in twin XL, for two long sleepers in one cabinet.

Which collections make a twin XL Murphy Bed?

All five collections make a twin XL, with the same layouts as a twin: Urban, Metropolitan, Penthouse, InLine and Studio vertically, Urban, Metropolitan and InLine horizontally, and the Urban Stack bunk bed.

How much room does a twin XL Murphy Bed need to open?

Open, a vertical twin XL reaches 90″ out from the wall (95″ for Penthouse), five inches more than a twin. A horizontal twin XL reaches 49″ and the bunk bed 53″. Vertical twin XL, queen and king beds share the longer swing, so check a ceiling fan or light with the ceiling clearance calculator.

How much does a Twin XL Murphy Bed cost?

Twin XL Murphy Beds at BredaBeds start at $1,251.20 for the Twin XL Urban Murphy Bed at today’s sale price. Beds with storage hutches start at $1,523.20. Beds with a sofa start at $2,890.40. Color and hutch options set the final price.

What goes in the hutches?

Side hutches stand beside the bed cabinet. In Urban, Metropolitan and InLine they’re 16″ deep with shelves; Penthouse and Studio hutches are 21″ deep, wardrobe depth, for hanging clothes. Most hutches come with open shelves, and you can add soft-close doors, or soft-close drawers with a pull-out night shelf, when you configure the bed; a Penthouse hutch has a full-height door as standard, or drawers instead. Horizontal beds in Urban, Metropolitan and InLine come with a top hutch option over the bed, and Metropolitan makes one with top and side hutches.

Do I need a special mattress?

No. Any standard U.S. mattress works, including memory foam and pillow tops, up to 13″ thick and no more than 110 lb (8″ on the top bunk of the Urban Stack bunk bed). We recommend 11″ or less: a mattress from 11″ to 13″ thick needs a modification to the headboard. You don’t use a box spring. Our Gel-Max memory foam mattress comes in all five sizes.

Which mattresses fit a Twin XL Murphy Bed?

Any standard twin XL (dorm-length) mattress, 38″ × 80″, up to 13″ thick (11″ or less recommended) and no more than 110 lb, with no box spring. On the Urban Stack bunk bed the top bunk takes up to 8″. Our Gel-Max memory foam mattress comes in twin XL.

How does the InLine sofa work with the bed?

By day the InLine sofa sits in front of the closed bed. At night you take off the four sofa cushions and fold the bed down. The sofa comes in 7 colors, chosen separately from the bed’s 14, and the matching InLine Coffee Table is sold separately.

Are Murphy Beds easy to open and close?

Yes. Our spring mechanism is counterbalanced to the weight of your mattress, so the bed lifts and lowers with little effort. The springs are made for everyday use and rated to lose just 5% of their tension over 30 years. Sheets and blankets can stay on if you tuck them in at the edges.

Does a Murphy Bed attach to the wall?

Yes. Every BredaBed attaches to the wall, and we include the hardware. You don’t need to remove your baseboard: choose a baseboard notch size when you configure your bed.

How much weight can a Murphy Bed hold?

It varies by model, but as a rule our beds support the mattress plus about 250 lb per person. The mattress itself should weigh no more than 110 lb.

How is it delivered, and do I assemble it?

Each bed is made to order in Meridian, Idaho, and ships flat-packed on a pallet. At checkout you choose curbside or garage delivery, or room-of-choice placement, and in some areas delivery with professional assembly. Otherwise you assemble it: the parts are machined on computerized equipment, and every bed comes with illustrated instructions. See Murphy Bed Assembly.

What’s the warranty?

A 10-year limited warranty on mechanical parts (the mechanism, bed frame and leg support system) and a 1-year limited warranty on wood parts. Because we’re the manufacturer, we ship replacement parts directly. See Warranty, Shipping, and Returns.

Where are BredaBeds made?

In our factory in Meridian, Idaho. We’re a family business, have sold Murphy Beds online since 2012, and source our wood panels from American suppliers, mostly in the Pacific Northwest. Read our story.
