Queen Murphy Beds

A Murphy Bed, also called a wall bed, is hinged at one end so it folds up into a cabinet against the wall when you’re not using it. It’s named after William Murphy, who patented his folding bed in the early 1900s. BredaBeds use a counterbalanced spring mechanism, so one room can be a guest room, office or living room by day and a bedroom at night.

Mostly the door style and the cabinet depth. Urban has flat slab doors in melamine and the lowest prices. Metropolitan has raised-panel doors in 3D laminate for a classic look. Penthouse has faux-drawer fronts on a 21″-deep cabinet. InLine comes with its own sofa. Studio pairs slab doors with optional 21″-deep hutches. Penthouse and Studio hutches are wardrobe depth, for hanging clothes; the other collections’ hutches are 16″ deep with shelves. Compare all five collections.

On a vertical Murphy Bed you sleep perpendicular to the wall, and the cabinet is tall and narrow. On a horizontal bed you sleep parallel to the wall, and the cabinet is wide and short, which helps under low or sloped ceilings and in rooms without the floor depth for a vertical bed to open. A vertical queen is 66″ wide for the bed on its own and 88″ tall, and opens 90″ into the room. A horizontal queen is 86″ wide and 68″ tall without a top hutch, and opens 70″, made in Urban, Metropolitan and InLine, each with a top hutch option, and Metropolitan also makes one with top and side hutches. Queen is the largest horizontal size we make.

Side hutches stand beside the bed cabinet. In Urban, Metropolitan and InLine they’re 16″ deep with shelves; Penthouse and Studio hutches are 21″ deep, wardrobe depth, for hanging clothes. Most hutches come with open shelves, and you can add soft-close doors, or soft-close drawers with a pull-out night shelf, when you configure the bed; a Penthouse hutch has a full-height door as standard, or drawers instead. Horizontal beds in Urban, Metropolitan and InLine come with a top hutch option over the bed, and Metropolitan makes one with top and side hutches.

No. Any standard U.S. mattress works, including memory foam and pillow tops, up to 13″ thick and no more than 110 lb (8″ on the top bunk of the Urban Stack bunk bed). We recommend 11″ or less: a mattress from 11″ to 13″ thick needs a modification to the headboard. You don’t use a box spring. Our Gel-Max memory foam mattress comes in all five sizes.

Any standard queen mattress, 60″ × 80″, up to 13″ thick (11″ or less recommended) and no more than 110 lb, with no box spring. Our Gel-Max memory foam mattress comes in queen.

By day the InLine sofa sits in front of the closed bed. At night you take off the four sofa cushions and fold the bed down. The sofa comes in 7 colors, chosen separately from the bed’s 14, and the matching InLine Coffee Table is sold separately.

Yes. Our spring mechanism is counterbalanced to the weight of your mattress, so the bed lifts and lowers with little effort. The springs are made for everyday use and rated to lose just 5% of their tension over 30 years. Sheets and blankets can stay on if you tuck them in at the edges.

Yes. Every BredaBed attaches to the wall, and we include the hardware. You don’t need to remove your baseboard: choose a baseboard notch size when you configure your bed.

It varies by model, but as a rule our beds support the mattress plus about 250 lb per person. The mattress itself should weigh no more than 110 lb.

Each bed is made to order in Meridian, Idaho, and ships flat-packed on a pallet. At checkout you choose curbside or garage delivery, or room-of-choice placement, and in some areas delivery with professional assembly.
