Urban Collection

Clean slab doors, lowest prices

Urban is our essential Murphy Bed: flat slab doors in durable melamine on a 16″-deep cabinet. It’s the most affordable collection and comes in vertical, horizontal and bunk layouts. Choose it for a clean, modern look at the best price.

Metropolitan Collection

Classic raised-panel doors

Metropolitan puts raised-panel doors in 3D laminate on a 16″-deep cabinet, so the closed bed looks like traditional cabinetry. It also has our widest choice of horizontal layouts, including one with top and side hutches.

Penthouse Collection

Looks like a dresser, holds hanging clothes

Penthouse has faux-drawer fronts, so the closed bed looks like a tall dresser. The cabinet is 21″ deep, 5″ deeper than Urban and Metropolitan, and the optional side hutches are wardrobe depth, with closet rods and a full-height door as standard. Choose it when the bed also needs to work as a closet.

InLine Collection

Comes with its own sofa

InLine pairs the Murphy Bed with its own sofa. By day it’s a sofa; at night you take off four cushions and fold the bed down. Choose it when the room needs real seating as well as a bed.

Studio Collection

Slab doors, optional wardrobe hutches

Studio pairs a 16″-deep bed with optional 21″-deep hutches, with a hanging rod available, and lets you pick the bed and hutch colors separately. It’s Urban’s clean look with room for closet space beside the bed.

Murphy Bed questions

Answers from the team that builds BredaBeds in Meridian, Idaho.

What is a Murphy Bed?

A Murphy Bed, also called a wall bed, is hinged at one end so it folds up into a cabinet against the wall when you’re not using it. It’s named after William Murphy, who patented his folding bed in the early 1900s. BredaBeds use a counterbalanced spring mechanism, so one room can be a guest room, office or living room by day and a bedroom at night.

What’s the difference between the BredaBeds collections?

Mostly the door style and the cabinet depth. Urban has flat slab doors in melamine and the lowest prices. Metropolitan has raised-panel doors in 3D laminate for a classic look. Penthouse has faux-drawer fronts on a 21″-deep cabinet. InLine comes with its own sofa. Studio pairs slab doors with optional 21″-deep hutches. Penthouse and Studio hutches are wardrobe depth, for hanging clothes; the other collections’ hutches are 16″ deep with shelves. Compare all five collections.

Should I get a vertical or a horizontal Murphy Bed?

On a vertical Murphy Bed you sleep perpendicular to the wall, and the cabinet is tall and narrow. On a horizontal bed you sleep parallel to the wall, and the cabinet is wide and short, which helps under low or sloped ceilings and in rooms without the floor depth for a vertical bed to open. Urban, Metropolitan and InLine make horizontal beds, in twin through queen; the Urban Stack bunk bed is horizontal too. See Vertical vs. Horizontal Murphy Beds.

What size Murphy Bed do I need?

Twin (38″ × 75″) and Twin XL (38″ × 80″) sleep one. Full (54″ × 75″) sleeps one comfortably or two snugly. Queen (60″ × 80″) and King (76″ × 80″) sleep two. King is made in our vertical beds only, and we don’t make a California King. Each size page lists the cabinet dimensions of every model, and the ceiling clearance calculator checks the bed’s swing.

How much does a Murphy Bed cost?

Murphy Beds at BredaBeds start at $1,200 for the Urban Murphy Bed at today’s sale price. Beds with storage hutches start at $1,472. Beds with a sofa start at $2,824. Color and hutch options set the final price.

What goes in the hutches?

Side hutches stand beside the bed cabinet. In Urban, Metropolitan and InLine they’re 16″ deep with shelves; Penthouse and Studio hutches are 21″ deep, wardrobe depth, for hanging clothes. Most hutches come with open shelves, and you can add soft-close doors, or soft-close drawers with a pull-out night shelf, when you configure the bed; a Penthouse hutch has a full-height door as standard, or drawers instead. Horizontal beds in Urban, Metropolitan and InLine come with a top hutch option over the bed, and Metropolitan makes one with top and side hutches.

Do I need a special mattress?

No. Any standard U.S. mattress works, including memory foam and pillow tops, up to 13″ thick and no more than 110 lb (8″ on the top bunk of the Urban Stack bunk bed). We recommend 11″ or less: a mattress from 11″ to 13″ thick needs a modification to the headboard. You don’t use a box spring. Our Gel-Max memory foam mattress comes in all five sizes.

How does the InLine sofa work with the bed?

By day the InLine sofa sits in front of the closed bed. At night you take off the four sofa cushions and fold the bed down. The sofa comes in 7 colors, chosen separately from the bed’s 14, and the matching InLine Coffee Table is sold separately.

Are Murphy Beds easy to open and close?

Yes. Our spring mechanism is counterbalanced to the weight of your mattress, so the bed lifts and lowers with little effort. The springs are made for everyday use and rated to lose just 5% of their tension over 30 years. Sheets and blankets can stay on if you tuck them in at the edges.

Does a Murphy Bed attach to the wall?

Yes. Every BredaBed attaches to the wall, and we include the hardware. You don’t need to remove your baseboard: choose a baseboard notch size when you configure your bed.

How much weight can a Murphy Bed hold?

It varies by model, but as a rule our beds support the mattress plus about 250 lb per person. The mattress itself should weigh no more than 110 lb.

How is it delivered, and do I assemble it?

Each bed is made to order in Meridian, Idaho, and ships flat-packed on a pallet. At checkout you choose curbside or garage delivery, or room-of-choice placement, and in some areas delivery with professional assembly. Otherwise you assemble it: the parts are machined on computerized equipment, and every bed comes with illustrated instructions. See Murphy Bed Assembly.

What’s the warranty?

A 10-year limited warranty on mechanical parts (the mechanism, bed frame and leg support system) and a 1-year limited warranty on wood parts. Because we’re the manufacturer, we ship replacement parts directly. See Warranty, Shipping, and Returns.

Where are BredaBeds made?
